Four days after the outbreak of the battle of Verdun, elements of the German 24th Brandenburg Regiment (6 Infantry Division, III Armeekorps) achieve to seize Fort Douaumont .

Fort Douaumont before the battle

Due to the French military doctrine at the time, who no longer believes in standing defensive fortifications and favor the offensive, Douaumont is occuped only by 57 French soldiers without external communications, who are quickly captured.

The capture of this major spot, ideally located on the right bank of the Meuse river, five kilometers North-East from the city of Verdun, will provide to the Germans an observatory, a shelter and a defensive pivot of the highest order. The consequences will affect the entire Battle of Verdun and the psychological impact on the French troops will be considerable. Fort Douaumont will be taken over by the French elements of RICM only on October 24, so two months before the end of the slaughter of Verdun.

General Philippe Pétain, French commander of the Battle of Verdun, will say that Fort Douaumont costed 100 000 deads to France.

The seismograph of Nice records a blast off the cape Camarat, in the Mediterranean Sea: The French submarine Eurydice (S644) , Daphné class, has just disappeared with all hands, entailing in the death his 57 crew members. The blast was felt up to the port of Toulon. It's not about an explosion but about an implosion, approximately 600 meters deep, immersion of hull destruction.

The wreck of Eurydice was spotted and photographed by Mizar, specialized device of the U.S. Navy. The cause of the wreck is not clearly established, the most likely hypothesis is a collision with the Tunisian cargo Tabarka, on which were detected recent tracks of scratches on its hull.

77 years ago, in Spain, the Republican army was losing her last fight in Madrid. The Spanish Republic, born in the polls, abandoned by the so-called great democracies of Europe, bent under the boot of fascism. Six days later, the dictator Franco broadcasted his último parte. Spain sank into a darkness that will last 36 years.
