Thank you Nik for this report. It was a terrible war and all these innocent deaths , whose fault? To our politicians, our military officers?
Anyway, this video really made me feel uncomfortable, I had the bowls in the stomach and tears to the eye!

My opinion is this :
France had just spent five years under the nazi boot. She leaves WW2, thanks to the other allied countries, free but devastated. France is not the size anymore to stand up on her high horse and claim her colonial empire. History is on, people want their independence and the French army, just at the beginning of its reconstruction and which is nothing without the US material support, is sent to fight a "communist rebellion"? The country needs everything, starting by food, and we go playing Popeye at the opposite side of the world? France had nothing better to do, really? Or maybe she lost the signification of the term "humility" ...? It is maybe, even doubtless, a little bit simple shortcut but, if the choice had been possible, it would have been necessary to listen to Leclerc, and not to d'Argenlieu. France has acted out there as if nothing had happened between 1939 and 1945, as if these five years on her knees were just a little joke and as she could continue to play the big guys in the big leagues. She took the slaps of history in full mouth, right cheek in Indochina, left cheek in Algeria.
" I have recommended to the government the recognition of the State of Vietnam, there was no other solution. There could not be question of reconquering the north with arms, we didn't have any, and we never would have the means. Remember the South. Here the failure is certain ... To keep Vietnam within the French Union is the goal, even if we have to speak about independence. In Fontainebleau is to be found a solution guaranteeing to France at least maintaining its economic and cultural interests ... considering that Ho Chi Minh will persist in wanting to get rid of us ... For this, tighten the rope, pull it. .. but do for it never breaks! ... We need peace! "
