I don't like the 3ds format too much, because it has the tendency to change the textures names (materials) upon export.
I think that you could try instead: i3d to max, max to obj and finally obj to 4ds. This way the materials name would be the same.
If you like i could try to import other H&D Deluxe maps to H&D 2 for you. I have 3ds max 3.1, 3ds max 2010, 3ds max 8 and other modelling software. I managed to import few H&D2 maps into H&D Deluxe on the other hand for testing purposes.
