Despite the absence of specific evidences of their guilt in a robbery and murder of two men, and after a trial of dubious fairness, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti , two Italian anarchists immigrants, are executed on the electric chair in Boston, Massachusetts, sparking a huge international criticism.
Sacco and Vanzetti will be rehabilitated 50 years later to the day, by Massachusetts Governor Michael Dukakis.
" Today is the Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti Memorial Day. The atmosphere of their trial and appeals were permeated by prejudice against foreigners and hostility toward unorthodox political views. The conduct of many of the officials involved in the case shed serious doubt on their willingness and ability to conduct the prosecution and trial fairly and impartially. Simple decency and compassion, as well as respect for truth and an enduring commitment to our nation's highest ideals, require that the fate of Sacco and Vanzetti be pondered by all who cherish tolerance, justice and human understanding. "

Canopus , first French thermonuclear test, detonate over the Fangataufa atoll, in Polynesia, liberating an energy of 2.6 megatons.
With this test, France becomes the fifth thermonuclear power, after the USA, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and China.
And then what...?

The battle of Heligoland
The first naval battle of WW1, and a complex one. Probably not the "largest" - this qualification usually means the Battle of Jutland - but perhaps the most important.
Indeed, even more than by the difference in casualties on both sides, and even if Great-Britain have also lessons to learn about it, this battle will have major implications on the German strategic thinking about the naval warfare.

The Moscow-Washington hotline is commissioned.
In October 1962, the Cuban missile crisis , which brought the world to the brink of nuclear abyss, clearly highlights the need for direct communication between Americans and Soviets heads of state.
Commonly called "red phone" to symbolize its urgency aspect, this direct channel is not a phone and is not red, but that's okay ...
