The French armoured cruiser Léon Gambetta is hit by two torpedoes from the Austrian U-boot U5 and sinks in ten minutes in the Adriatic Sea, off the Strait of Otranto.
This is the first loss for the French Navy during WW1. Also, with only 137 survivors within a crew of 821, the sinking of the Léon Gambetta remains one of the most greatest tragedy in the history of the French Navy.

With the massacre of Setif , France, who has just signed at the table of the victors of the Second World War, enters a new war, his own, the one she will deny for a long time, the one she will take so long to to name "war", the one where she will also dirty her hands, because there is no clean war, the one of which she still pays the consequences today, several generations later.
There will be many French flags raised today in the cities and countrysides of France, and that's normal. Perhaps some will also think about this Algerian flag, raised a May 8, 1945 in the streets of Setif ...

The seize of the US container ship SS Mayaguez by the Khmer Rouge, and the American operation to retake it, leads to three days of intense combats between US Marines and Khmer Rouge forces on Koh Tang island in Cambodia.
This event known as the Mayaguez incident is often referred to as the last battle of the Vietnam War.

on this day on 1903. brothers Wright received a patent for his flying device.
Buoyant over the success of their 1902 glider, the Wright brothers were no longer content to merely add to the growing body of aeronautical knowledge; they were going to invent the airplane. Still, they recognized that much hard work lay ahead, especially the creation of a propulsion system. During the spring and summer of 1903, they were consumed with leaping that final hurdle into history.
On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made four brief flights at Kitty Hawk with their first powered aircraft. The Wright brothers had invented the first successful airplane.
