This weekend is celebrated here the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Maquis de Saint-Marcel , the Mecca of the Resistance in Brittany during WW2, where the French SAS paratroopers distinguished themselves from June to August 1944 during the Operations Dingson, Samwest, Lost and Cooney parties.

Well lads, having a look on the English Wikipedia link about the Maquis de Saint-Marcel in my previous post in this topic, i see this point that i want to speak about here.

I quote " It was created just before the Normandy landings with the objectives of preventing German army reinforcements from reaching the coast, thus facilitating the task of the allied landing forces."

This is not quite exact. The Maquis de Saint-Marcel was initially created in February 1943, so about 15 months before D-Day, by an handful of Resistance fighters led by Émile Guimard and Antoine Rolland. At this time, the goal was to have a spot for dropping weapons for the Resistance, but some missions failed and in May 1943 the operations are stopped for keeping discretion.

When Operation Overlord was planned, the idea was to reactivate this drop zone, strategically situated in Brittany, by dropping SAS teams whose mission was to enforce bases and drop zones (Operation Samwest and Operation Dingson), to manage sabotages (Operation Cooney parties) and to meet the Resistance for managing guerilla warfare with the Resistance fighters of this maquis, in order to block Germans troops in Brittany so as they cannot join the Normandy front. In this optic, the contacts with the Resistance in Saint-Marcel were reinforced in order to gather as much fighters as possible. At the culminant point of the events of Saint-Marcel, there were these 3000 fighters and 200 French SAS that English Wikipedia talks about.

About this, the French Wikipedia is of course a bit more detailed, also about the fight itself and its aftermath. :mm1:

Also this picture that shows some interesting informations as the operation area and the spots of sabotage operations during Cooney parties.

As we say in France, there are some cow-boys who don't feel themselves peeing as soon as they got one kilo of steel in their hand...

Maybe the funny guys thought that they were USSS agents and that Saint-Malo is located near Washington D.C... :sarcy:

Pfff... Some old rememberings, some white hair more...

Pfûûût 1, the old soldier is still alive...

" Hey you bastards, i'm still here... "

EDIT : Some messages on my answering machine, too...

EDIT 2 : And this is for you, Manu, my friend, you old Irish son of a bitch...
