Sooooo. You know about the massive performance issue we have on Linux whenever we switch maps? Well, I don't want to cheer too soon but I might have found a solution.

I just tried launching the game using gamemode.
gamemoderun wine ./HD2_SabreSquadron.exe

I then headed to the RPR servers and started nextmapping and the game remains very much playable.
Can anyone else test it out to check?

Not sure about other distributions. Installation should be similar. Check your package managers and report back if you want.

The Arch Wiki mentions about the "renice" option in gamemode.ini. I didn't even play with that and it works anyway.

Thank you, Damni I tried running the command, but since my system isn't properly updated... it says it's missing a new library. I'll do it when I move to the other system and try it asap.

I have been testing this a bit more, both on =RpR= servers and by creating a private server with 7-8 maps
and I noticed that:
  • the game overall performance has definitely improved;
  • nextmap works almost always without problems;
  • some (large) maps (Libya 3, Sicily 2 for example) still have issues (low frame rate), which I have been fixing by switching to another workspace and getting back to game (why does that fix the lag????);
  • I cycled through that private server twice and never had to restart the game;

Thank you for testing

Switching to another workplace? This reminds me about the moments when I am using Stern's TACO for special camera movement and I have to ALT+Tab for different reasons. After a while I can't type messages in game, like "Say: " and "Say Team: " - the dialogue opens and the input does not appear. I have to restart the game... but this is another issues.

Wonderful work, Damni!

OK I also tried the "renice" option as mentioned in the Arch Wiki:

You may want to make sure that desiredgov is set to performance and maybe increase the renice to 10 or so for higher priority for your game.Note that this package comes with a drop-in file etc/security/limits.d/10-gamemode.conf that allows for the renicing feature to work. If you wish to have gamemode renice game processes, you will want to create and join the gamemode group.

I don't see any difference at all.  Don't bother creating new groups and modify your user.
