At 7 am, the first German shell falls on the city. Within 48 hours, two million shells of heavy artillery are going to fall on the French positions, one every three seconds. It is the beginning of a battle which is going to last ten months and which will enter the history as one of the most monstrous butchery, maybe even the most monstrous, in which men were engaged : the battle of Verdun .

The Russian, Ukrainian-born composer Sergei Prokofiev die in Moscow, aged 61.
Apart from that, it seems that another guy, nicknamed " the little father of the people " also broke his pipe the same day, in the same city,
after having peed in his pants, but that's not my problem.

With the Anschluss , Hitler proceeds with the annexation of Austria.
Any similitude, 76 years after, with Putin and Crimea is not accidental at all, it's only History that repeats itself, just because people didn't understand first time...

The wreck of the supertanker Torrey Canyon , off the Southwest coast of the British islands, and the ecological disaster which follows opens the era of the oil spills in the XXth century.
French Wikipedia speaks, about the consequences of this wreck, about an "awareness" at the European level. Yeah, awareness... For speaking only about this part of Europe, it will be needed many others, oil spills, Olympic Bravery, Boehlen, Amoco Cadiz, Bételgeuse, Gino, Tanio, Erika...
It will be needed many killed animals, destroyed coasts, ravaged ecosystems... And the fight is far from being finished, we know something about it, here...

A few days only after Hitler obtained the full powers, Heinrich Himmler "inaugurates" the concentration camp of Dachau , the first concentration camp of the third Reich, and which will remain the prototype and the model of all other concentration camps of the nazi death machine until the end of WW2.
