Here in Lorient, as in lot of cities, there was a ceremony yesterday to commemorate the victory against nazism but, for this city, the real end of WW2 is May 10, 1945

Indeed, after the success of Operation Overlord and following Hitler's orders, the German troops of Lorient entrenched behind the U-boot base complex and hundreds of bunkers in the full area. In 1945, the Allied strategy didn't consider anymore the Lorient U-boot base as a main threat as it was the case during the Battle of Atlantic. The goal was Berlin and so the area of Lorient became a fortress, what German called "Festung".

The German garrison of the Lorient pocket endured a siege 277 days long, conducted by American troops and French Resistance fighters.
The last German elements surrender only two days after the official end of war in Europe.

Monument in the city center

It says : "Here, on May 10, 1945, at 04:00 PM, the last elements of German troops of the Lorient pocket surrended to the French forces."
