Well Jacobston I just think it is very strange that a head of state is not chosen because of his or hers qualities but purely based on ancestry. It's wrong, even if the function is only symbolic. The King or Queen are not "normal" people but stand above the law in certain ways and have more rights than I do, which is wrong fundamentally. Apart from all that the Dutch Royal family is very rich but the Dutch state still spends millions each year on their palaces and grounds, allowances, security and so on. In the past the king had a function by lack of government but in this day and age it is simply archaic and goes against the notion of "all people are equal".

Of course there are some benefits to having a king, he helps with foreign relations and helps with business deals but in my opinion a President chosen by the people could do this too and the people would also have some influence on what kind of person will represent our country.

jacobston wrote: We have a similar holiday here. Every year, on the second last weekend in may we celebrate Victoria Day , in honor of Queen Victoria's birthday.

I personally have no real strong opinions on the monarch. Canada, being a former British colony, still recognizes the Queen as head of state. Her picture is still up in every school and she has final say on laws that we pass, but she really doesn't seem to give a rats ass about Canada, so we have the Governor General to act as a representative to the queen.

Other than that the monarch is mostly for show. They provide good food for tabloids and reality TV, and draw a lot of attention whenever there is a wedding of a new family member.

it's a vast topic and lot to say about it but, in fact, even a President elected by the people got lot of privileges and rights that "normal" people don't have. Also, about legitimacy, when i consider my country, you see that a President can be elected with more than 50% of voters, that seems legitimate but if you consider that about 50% of the people doesn't vote because they're disgusted by lot of political lies and scandals, where is the legitimacy ? And about wasting people's money, we know something about it in France... :sylvester:

EDIT : About these issues of vote, people's will and politics, here's a magistral book written by Alain Etchegoyen :

La démocratie malade du mensonge ( Democracy sick of lying ). :gj:

Well, even with that low number of voters 25% did elect that president, which is still 100% more voters than for the Dutch king  I am not saying that an elected president is the best way or without problems, for me it's more about a fucking potato head that sits on the throne without having done anything to prove he is the best man for the job...I mean, look at him....
