See the Japanese film. The Hoodlum Soldier. You can find the first one somewhere with english subtitles. I have been trying to find the other sequels in the series but unfortunately i can't find them.

Shintaro Katsu's Zatoichi series is pretty good.

Takeshi Kitano's Films of 90s are pretty good.
