In Loyada, Djibouti, during an operation against terrorists who kidnapped thirty-two children as hostages in a school bus, five snipers of the GIGN performs, for the first time, a killing shot using the technique called "simultaneous shot". As a result, five terrorists are killed in the same fraction of a second.

Unfortunately, a last sixth terrorist, who was not noticed so far, opens fire against the children inside the school bus before being shot down. Two children lose their life : Nadine Durand, deceased on the spot, and Valérie Geissbuhler, deceased several days after at the military hospital of Val-de-Grâce in Paris.

" For us, we had failed, I tell you sincerely. For us, to succeed was to bring the thirty-two children back to their families, and that was not the success we hoped. So, well, it was a bit... a bit hard. That's it. No one has measured the distress it has been for us not to succeed completely. That said, compared to the families, it's nothing at all. It's just us who drag our corpses. "

Christian Prouteau
Founder of the GIGN
Commander of the GIGN (1973 - 1983)

After two years of work, the " three-hundred meters tower " is inaugurated in Paris, just some days before the Exposition Universelle of 1889.

At this period, the tower is, by far, the world's highest construction. The second one, the Washington Monument, is "only" 169 meters.

Planned to be destroyed after the event, the tower will finally remain and be used as a radio transmitter.

Since 1991, the Eiffel Tower is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Present days, the Iron Lady remains the most-visited paid monument in the world and should reach the mark of 300 million of visitors in 2017.

Happy Birthday, Lady.
